Rhode Island, The Ocean State,  is famous for silverware and jewelry production. Its ocean front cliff sides, beaches and temperate weather draw in summer tourists each year. But like many places, Rhode Island is also home to those suffering from addiction.

Last year, the state of Rhode Island launched a massive campaign that set out to decrease the stigma placed on those  addicted to unprescribed pain killers and other drugs, encouraging them come out of the shadows, cast shame aside and seek help.

Rhode Island Addiction Statistics

  • 12.1% of youth  report using illegal drugs
  • 19.3% of adolescents admit to binge drinking
  • 62.1% of teens see no harm in drinking 5+ drinks once to twice a week
  • 4.2% admit to taking unprescribed painkillers
  • Nearly 70 thousand Rhode Islanders are dependent on or abuse alcohol
  • 30 thousand are dependent on or abuse illegal drugs

And yet, surprisingly,

  • 7.4% of alcohol abusers and 17.3% drug abusers get treatment each year.

We should note that Rhode Island does have one of the highest treatment rates for drug abusers in the US.

Rhode Island holds several options when it comes to treatment for addiction. Two of these treatment options are The Phoenix House, which specializes in drug treatment for teens, and Caritas, Inc Corkery House, which specializes in gender-specific programs.

The Phoenix House, located in Providence, offers a teen-focused treatment program with case management upon discharge. The Phoenix House tailors the treatment plan to fit the person, taking into consideration social, biological and psychological factors, as well as addressing co-occurring mental health concerns.
